Rubber Gasket Material
Rubber Gasketing
There are many different
types of rubber sheet gasket
material.
Nitrile
(Buna-N) Trade Names:
Chemigum Hycar (Zeo (Goodyear)n Chemical) Ny Syn (Copolymer)
Paracril (Uniroyal) Krynac (Polysar) Perbunan (Mobay)
The most widely used elastomer. Excellent resistance to
petroleum products. Excellent compression set, tear and abrasion
resistance. Does not have good resistance to ozone, sunlight, or
weather, unless specifically compounded. Should not be stored in
direct sunlight or near motors or other electrical equipment which
may generate ozone.
Temperature range: -40° to +250°F.
Fluorocarbon (Viton, FKM or Fluorel)
Fluorocarbon (FKM) is a high tech. elastomer designed for extreme
heat, oil and chemical resistance. Viton resists aliphalactic
aromatic and halogenated hydrocarbons, concentrated acids, alkalis,
animal and vegetable oils.- 75 durometer is preferred. Avoid colored
(brown or green) grades; the clay fillers used to replace carbon
black are subject to chemical attack.
Temperature range: -20 F to +400 F
EPDM -
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer :
EPDM is a black plate finish sheet with superior
resistance to weathering, ozone and UV exposure. EPDM also provides
excellent chemical resistance*, and good electrical properties.
EPDM resists animal and vegetable oils, steam, water and oxygenated
solvents.
Peroxide cured grades are preferred.
Temperature range:
-65 F to +300 F
Chloroprene
(Neoprene)
Trade Names: Neoprene (E.l. duPont), Butachlor (Ditsugil), Bayprene
(Mobay)
Moderately resistant to petroleum products. Good Ozone and weather
resistance. Good compression set. Excellent for sealing
refrigeration fluids such as Freon®.
Temperature range -65o F to +250o F.
Silicone
sheet gasket material is a very versatile material ideal for a wide
range of applications. Silicone rubber gasket material offers
temperature resistance, weather (UV and ozone) resistance, and fire
resistance . Silicone gasket material has very good compression set
resistance allowing it to maintain a proper seal over many years.
Temperature range: on most silicone gasket materials is -80o
F to +450o F
Red Rubber
- Styrene Butadiene Rubber Sheet. Recommended for low applications
such as washers and gaskets for the heating and plumbing trades. Low
cost flange gasket material. Non-oil resistant compound that resists
flow under compression. Offers moderate to good performance against
low pressure. Good aging and abrasion resistance. Easily conforms to
uneven flange load.
Durometer - 75 ±10/-5. Tensile strength - 400 PSI. Temperature
range: - 20°F to +180°F continuous/210°F intermittent. Red color.
Cost: Low
Aflas - Preferred
for combinations of oil and amines or ammonia: sour crude oil, sour
gas, refrigeration. Aflas is an elastomeric based flouorubber, a copolymer of tetrafluroethlene
and propylene. This elastomer offers excellent chemical
resistance qualities, with serviceability in the temperatures up to
550 degrees F depending on environment. Services where Aflas
sheet might be applicable include inorganic acids, alkalis, high
temperature steam, polar solvents, organic bases, hydrocarbon oils,
amines and amine corrosion inhibitor systems, and hydrogen sulfide
bearing fluids.
-Temperature range: -20 F to +400
F (excursions to +600)
Perfluoroelastomer
(Kalrez, Chemraz) - Supplied for some chemical and high temperature
applications. Kalrez compound 4079 is most common, and offers
improved compression set resistance over compound 1050
